Vivo Nex Vs Oppo Find X: All-screen and no-bezel nirvana

Oppo and Vivo have launched their crazy futuristic phones, the Find X and the Nex, in India at Rs 44,990 and Rs 59,990 respectively. Oppo and Vivo are sister brands, but, their way of approaching the all-screen and no-bezel smartphone design is like chalk and cheese. Both the phones may be based on the same guiding principle -- to achieve all-screen and no-bezel nirvana -- but the Find X and the Nex are two very different phones which makes them all the more exciting.

While the Nex has only a pop-out front camera, in the Find X, both the front and rear cameras pop out in one go. The idea is to get rid of the bezel, and also the notch: offering more real estate than any other phone in the market right now. The Find X, of course, takes things even further by ditching the fingerprint scanner to reach its goal. While the Nex brings along a rather unconventional in-display fingerprint scanner. Among other things.

Clearly, both the Nex and the Find X, have may stand out features that make them stand out from one another and from the rest of the competition. While we've already reviewed the Nex and found to it to be quite impressive with regards to its sci-fi tech, the Find X will take some more time for us to come to a final conclusion. We will be comparing both the phones at length in the days to come, but before that, here's a quick walk-through of the Find X and the Nex to understand all the differences between the two phones.

1.Both the Nex and the Find X have an all-glass front and back. Both the phones have dual rear cameras and a single front shooter. The Nex sports a third-generation in-display fingerprint scanner that's said to be faster and more accurate than the one we saw on the recently launched Vivo X21. The Find X, on the other hand, does not have a fingerprint scanner. Instead it supports 3D facial recognition for biometric authentication. The 3D facial recognition technology on-board the Oppo Find X uses a system that's pretty similar to the one found on the iPhone X. It consists of a dot projector, an infrared camera and a flood illuminator that apparently makes O-Face (that's what Oppo calls its system) a whole lot secure and faster than conventional mechanisms. Also, it works in the dark, according to Oppo.

2.The Find X does not ship with conventional cameras. Instead it features a motorised system that pops out every time you need the cameras, or face unlock. Oppo calls it Stealth 3D camera system. The system is similar to the pop-out system found on the Vivo Nex, only in the case of the Find X, it involves both the front and rear cameras that sit nestled inside the glass sandwich and pop out only when you want them to. Oppo says that the system can pop out in just 0.5 seconds which is pretty nice, although it must be noted, that such a system that is dependant on moving parts would be prone to wear and tear over time. Oppo claims that the system can be used for roughly 300,000 times, which should get most users over 5 years of usage from the Find X. In the case of the Nex, only the front camera is part of the pop-out mechanism. Vivo says that it can be used hassle-free about 50,000 times and also it can withstand up to 500-grams of weight.

3.The Find X offers more real estate than the Nex, at least on paper. The Find X. for your reference, has a whopping 93.8 per cent screen-to-body ratio while the Nex offers 91.24 per cent screen-to-body ratio.

4.The Nex has a 3.5mm headphone jack. The Find X does not have an audio jack which means the same USB Type-C port will have to be used for charging, data syncing and audio out.

5.The Find X comes with a 6.4-inch 1080p+ OLED display while the Nex has a 6.59-inch 1080p+ Super AMOLED display.

6.Both the phones are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor clubbed with 8GB RAM. While the Find X comes with 256GB storage the Nex comes with 128GB storage. Expandable storage isn't supported by both the phones.

7.The Find X sports a dual camera system on the rear consisting of one 16MP camera and another 20MP shooter. There's OIS and also lots and lots of AI on-board. The Nex's dual rear camera system consists of one 12-megapixel sensor and another 5-megapixel sensor for depth sensing. There's OIS on-board here as well.

8.While the Find X has a 25-megapixel front camera, the Nex comes with a rather paltry 8-megapixel front camera.

9.Both the phones run Android 8.1 Oreo with custom skins on top. Oppo's custom skin is called Color OS while Vivo's custom skin is called Funtouch OS.

10.The Find X is backed by a 3,730mAh battery with support for VOOC fast charging. The Nex has a bigger 4,000mAh battery. Also it supports fast charging.

11.Oppo has launched the Find X in India for Rs 59,990 and it will be available in Glacier Blue and Bordeaux Red options starting from August 3 from Flipkart and across offline stores in India. The Vivo Nex has been launched in India at a price of Rs 44,990 and will be available for buying from Amazon India and Vivo's online store from July 21. The Nex will also be available for buying from physical retail stores.
