The Samsung Galaxy S9 is now available

Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S9, is out today. So if you’ve been holding off to see reviews, today’s the day that you can finally pick one up. (Our own Dan Seifert says that the S9 is a predictable but solid upgrade from last year’s Galaxy S8. But there are a few flaws — particularly on the software side — that Samsung hasn’t solved yet.)

The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus have all the bells and whistles you’d expect from the newest flagship from one of the world’s top smartphone makers. They have the same excellent OLED edge-to-edge “Infinity Display” that Samsung introduced with the S8 (5.8 inches on the S9 and 6.2 inches on the S9 Plus), the latest Snapdragon 845 processor, and a far more sensibly placed fingerprint sensor. This year, there are some hardware differences between the larger and smaller devices. For example, the S9 Plus, in addition to a bigger screen and battery, also has 6GB of RAM (over the S9’s 4GB), and a dual-camera system for zooming and portrait mode effects, similar to the Note 8 from last year.

There is also a new variable aperture camera system that Samsung is using on the S9, which physically controls the aperture blades on the camera to adjust from the f/2.4 aperture to an f/1.5 aperture in low-light conditions.

Figuring out the price of the S9 and S9 Plus will vary a lot depending on where you buy it. Fortunately, we’ve done all the hard work for you and put together a guide on that here. It still looks like buying from Samsung directly is your best bet. There, you’ll be able to pick up the S9 for $719.99 and the S9 Plus for $839.99.
