Samsung Suddenly 'Confirms' Radical Galaxy Smartphone Cancellation
Samsung has already confirmed (twice) it has big plans for 2018. But unfortunately a big part of them will now have to be scaled back after the company conceded the launch of arguably its most exciting new Galaxy smartphone this year is set to be cancelled…
Reported by the Korea Herald, Samsung mobile chief Koh Dong-jin has admitted plans to release a radical folding ‘Galaxy X’ smartphone have been hit by problems. And when asked if a 2018 release was still possible, he admitted: “It is difficult to talk about the date of the launch now.”
Defending the move Koh explained that “We want to unveil the products properly but now seems a bit early... We want to have a good reaction from customers once the phone is out in the market. But there are still durability issues that we need to address.”
Koh’s comments reverse a previous statement he made in September when he confidently responded to questions about a 2018 launch by proclaiming “for sure we will launch the product”. Furthermore Samsung appeared to be well on the way to a formal unveiling as early as this month after the Galaxy X passed Bluetooth certification and radio certification.
Koh stressed he retains confidence in the project saying a folding Galaxy ‘would have significant ramifications’ for the entire industry. But with Apple and LG also believed to be co-developing their own folding smartphone, the race is back on.
Yes, Samsung still has some exciting irons in the fire. The Galaxy S9 launch is imminent and I exclusively revealed its final design last month. Samsung’s newly releases Galaxy A8 and Galaxy A8 smartphones also have the potential to redefine what we expect from a midrange smartphone.
That said it was talk of a folding Galaxy X which had really caught the imagination…
