Could this be the long-promised Galaxy X? Certainly there is a lot of debate abound the form factor that a foldable smartphone could employ if it was to remain practical. While it’s not strictly speaking foldable by the user, it is a screen that is folded back on itself. It is also far more practical that a gatefold tablet or a booklike device.

As with all patents, remember that there is no guarantee that what is on show will make it to a finalised product. The patent could be impractical to manufacture at scale, uneconomical, or simply a defensive patent to prevent a competitor profiting from the same idea.

What I would say is that the foldable screen on show in this patent is something that feels less like a technology demonstrator and something that could be practical in a consumer device.

Although all the focus on Samsung’s new display technology has been around the presumptively named Galaxy X and its folding display, a recently filed patent shows the South Korean company taking this idea of a bendable display in completely the opposite direction.

The patent describes a way of folding a display back on itself to create a wraparound experience. The front of the device has a screen that is used in the normal way, and Samsung’s identifying curved edge is also present. Except the curved edge does not stop when it reaches the edge of the device, it continues to been round the long edge, through 180 degrees and extends into half of the back panel.

Although the screen does not flex in this design (reported by Ilse Jurrien), it is a clear offshoot of the bendable technology that the South Korean company has been working on for many years.
