The Samsung Gear S3 is every hotel owner's dream
Samsung has come up with a new use for its Gear S3 smartwatch that it hopes will see it flying off the shelves and straight onto the wrists of hotel workers.
Earlier this week, the firm showcased a service it developed for the LTE-enabled variant of the Gear S3 frontier that can send customer requests straight to an employee’s wrist, eliminating the need to lug around a cumbersome walkie-talkie.
Samsung envisages one member of staff processing all incoming requests and assigning them to the relevant team; so if a guest contacts reception requesting an extra towel or two, someone in housekeeping will receive an alert on their wrist.

The hands-free solution is ideal for staff who are always on the move – particularly those in the housekeeping department who require both of their hands to set the room and are prohibited from carrying a walkie-talkie in case it disturbs the guests.
Usually when a brand shows off a new use case for one of its products it’s in a bid to find a business to adopt it, but Samsung already has a major client on board, with the Viceroy L’Ermitage Beverly Hills being the first to be outfitted with the tech.
The finer details, like what kind of requests can be sent to the watch and whether it will also double as a walkie-talkie, will be discussed at the Hospitality Industry Technology Exposition and Conference (HITEC) in Houston, Texas next week.
The service will be commercially available this summer.
