The Huawei P20 Lite was launched in India last month, and it is priced at Rs. 19,999 in the country. It is available only in one RAM and storage capacity variant. The OPPO A3 was launched in China with a special introductory price of CNY 1,999 (approximately, Rs. 21,000), but its actual price is CNY 2,099 (roughly Rs. 22,000). The Vivo V9 Youth was launched in India for Rs. 19,990, but the market price is expected to be around Rs. 18,990. So, the Vivo V9 Youth is the most affordable smartphone among the three.

The Huawei P20 Lite has 5.84-inch LTPS IPS LCD screen, while the OPPO A3 and the Vivo V9 Youth have 6.2-inch and 6.3-inch IPS LCD screens. All phones have Full HD+ screen resolution and display cutouts for the front-facing camera and a few other sensors. The Huawei P20 Lite’s screen is the sharpest among the three. In terms of design, the Huawei P20 Lite and the Vivo V9 Youth have glass-and-metal designs. The OPPO A3 uses the same build, but the glass back has a very attractive diamond-finish pattern. None of these three phones have IP67/68 protection for dust and water resistance.

The P20 Lite runs Android 8.0 Oreo, while the OPPO A3 and the Vivo V9 Youth go one step ahead, running Android 8.1 Oreo. The P20 Lite has the EMUI 8.0 interface, while the OPPO A3 and the Vivo V9 Youth come with Color OS 5.0 and Funtouch OS 4.0 user interfaces. All user interfaces are heavily customised versions of Android, and it depends on your personal choice which one you would like better.

The Huawei P20 Lite uses the same Kirin 659 processor that’s used in the much cheaper Honor 7X and the Honor 9 Lite. The phone has 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. The Vivo V9 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor 4GB RAM, and 64GB internal storage. Both Kirin 659 and Snapdragon 450 chipsets use less powerful Cortex A53 CPU cores. The OPPO A3 on the other hand uses the MediaTek Helio P60 processor, which has four Cortex-A73 high-performance cores and the newer Mali-G72 MP3 GPU. The chipset is paired with 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. Overall, the OPPO A3 is relatively powerful and has higher storage.
While the Huawei P20 Lite and the Vivo V9 Youth have fingerprint readers, the OPPO A3 lacks the fingerprint reader and relies on Face Unlock for user authentication. The Huawei P20 Lite and the OPPO A3 have dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, while the Vivo V9 Youth lacks gigabit Wi-Fi. All three phones have FM Radio, Wi-Fi Direct, GPS, Bluetooth 4.2, and 3.5mm headphone ports. The Huawei P20 Lite has a USB Type-C port, while the other two phones still come with the older microUSB 2.0 interface. The front-facing 16MP selfie camera has f/2.0 aperture and 1.0μm pixels. The OPPO A3 has 16MP rear-facing camera with f/1.8 aperture, phase-detection autofocus, and 1080p video recording. Its 8MP front-facing camera has f/2.2 aperture and an ability to record 1080p videos. The Vivo V9 Youth has a 16MP+2MP rear-facing camera with phase-detection autofocus, LED flash and 1080p video recording. The phone’s 16MP selfie camera has f/2.0 aperture and it can record Full HD videos.

If it’s performance you’re after, the Huawei P20 Lite and the Vivo V9 Youth can’t match the speediness of the OPPO A3, thanks to those Cortex-A73 CPU cores and the newer generation GPU. If it’s the camera that you’re after, none of the phones should disappoint you, since all of them have 16MP rear-facing cameras. The Huawei P20 Lite has better connectivity features than the other two phones, especially considering the convenient USB Type-C port, but it is also the phone with the smallest capacity battery.
