Samsung's Note 9 Gains Two Big Advantages Over The Galaxy S9

Samsung’s Note 9 is set to be a big improvement on the Galaxy Note 9 if recent leaks are proven to be accurate.

It had seemed as if the upcoming phablet had nowhere to go after the Korean company launched the near-perfect, feature rich, Galaxy S9. But two recent revelations may have changed that.

Ice Universe, a Chinese leaker with a decent track record for accurate leaks, has revealed that the Note 9 could have either a 4000mAh or a 3850mAh battery. Both would be a huge improvement on the Note 8’s 3300mAh power pack, but obviously the former number is the most eye catching.

It’s not uncommon to see a large, 4000mAh, battery on a phablet phone - smaller brands like Xaomi and Honor often cram bigger cells into their devices. Samsung, too, has added large batteries to its lower-end phones, which is an important feature in developing markets.

But this is a rare move for a flagship device from Samsung and - if accurate - will go hand in hand with a new in-display fingerprint scanner. Last month it was rumoured that the Galaxy maker was weighing up including the new biometric hardware in the Note 9.

For the uninitiated, in-display fingerprint scanners are the next generation of fingerprint readers. The idea is that a sensor is placed behind the display that can read your fingerprint, instead of around the back of the device or crammed at the bottom of the front of the phone, thus reducing display size.

Outside of the obvious, there’s a possible, additional, benefit to including an in-display fingerprint scanner: internal space saving. It’s impossible to know for sure until we see a full device teardown, but the inclusion of the new sensor could be the reason for the Note 9’s supposed increased battery size.

It’s always important to take leaks with a pinch of salt. Judging by the two battery sizes mentioned - and the fact that the Korea Herald report said that Samsung was still “weighing up” including the new fingerprint scanner - it’s entirely possible neither of these features will make it into the Note 9.

The problem with that, though, is that Samsung’s next handset needs something to stand out from not just the crowded market, but also its own competition killing Galaxy S9, which isn’t a stylus and a slightly larger screen.
