Samsung Launches 970 Pro and Evo NVMe SSDs

Samsung 970 Evo and 970 Pro NVMe M.2 SSD

If you want a very fast PC or laptop then a hard drive doesn't cut it anymore due to SSDs being so fast and reliable. However, if you want the fastest storage possible, then NVMe SSDs using a PCIe interface are where the best performance lies. And Samsung just released the replacements for its already blisteringly fast NVMe SSD range.

We've been enjoying the performance offered by the Samsung 960 Pro and 960 Evo M.2 SSDs since 2016. We even awarded the 960 Evo our Editor's Choice for being a "wildly fast M.2 drive" while remaining affordable. Both drives continue to come near the top of the charts as a storage solution, but now Samsung is set to replace them with the 970 Pro and Evo.

While the read speed of the 970 SSDs remains the same as the 960s at 3,500MB/s, everything else has been improved. They use the latest PCIe Gen 3x4 lane interface and the M.2 (2280) form factor, and take full advantage of Samsung's latest V-NAND tech and a new Phoenix controller. What this means in practice is write speeds have improved by 30 percent, with the 970 Pro achieving 2,700MB/s and the Evo 2,500MB/s. Intelligent TurboWrite technology helps keep those write speeds high thanks to a buffer that can be up to 78GB in size.

Endurance and reliability are greatly improved, with Samsung claiming you can write up to 1,200 terabytes of data to both drives. That's 50 percent higher than the 960 Pro and Evo drives. Further reliability is offered by a Dynamic Thermal Guard ensuring the drives don't overheat and Samsung Magician software, which manages the drives and keeps them performing optimally.

The differences between the 970 Pro and Evo are small, but the 970 Pro is going to be the better performer. The Pro uses 2-bit MLC memory, enjoys write speeds of up to 2,700MB/s with 500,000 IOPS. The Evo on the other hand uses 3-bit MLC memory, has write speeds of up to 2,500MB/s with 480,000 IOPS. The Pro is offered in 512GB and 1TB capacities, where as the Evo will be offered as 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB drives. All the drives come with a five-year warranty.

If you'd like one of these new drives, Samsung says they will be available from May 7 worldwide. Pricing starts at $119.99 for the 970 Evo and $329.99 for the 970 Pro.
