Samsung Galaxy S9 battery life may be WORSE if you bought the phone in the UK

NOT all Samsung phones are born equal – so you may have been ripped off if you bought your new Galaxy S9 in the UK.

New tests have revealed that Britain's version of the £739 smartphone may have worse battery life compared to the American model.

In fact, any Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+ smartphone bought in Europe may have the same issue.

Technology blog AnandTech tested European and American versions of the latest Samsung smartphone.

And the results were shocking.

When web browsing on Wi-Fi, the American version of the phone managed 10.48 hours of battery life – but the European model died after just 6.8 hours.

There's almost always a difference in performance and battery life between American and European Samsung Galaxy S9 phones.

That's because the South Korean tech giant uses different processors for each model.

For the American model, Samsung uses chips built by US firm Qualcomm – specifically the Snapdragon 845.

But in the UK and Europe, Samsung opts for its own custom-built processor, the Exynos 9810.

It's not always clear-cut which chip is better – some years the Qualcomm processor will win, and others Samsung's chip will be top.

And it seems as though the Qualcomm version is winning in terms of battery life for 2018.

However, it's worth noting that this is just one reviewer's test, and so it might not be representative of every user.

It's also worth remembering that 10 hours of web browsing isn't exactly normal usage.

People are likely to drain their phone batteries in lots of different ways – making calls, playing video games and taking photos.

Still, the battery review offers a fairly damning verdict: "The Exynos 9810 Galaxy S9 absolutely fell flat on its face in this test, and posted the worst results among our tracking of the latest generation devices.

"This was such a terrible run that I redid the test and still resulted in the same runtime."

The reviewer added that the Samsung-chip Galaxy S9 lasted three hours less than LAST year's Galaxy S8 (also running on a Samsung chip).

We've asked Samsung for comment and will update this article with any response.
