Samsung Leak Reveals Radical New Galaxy Smartphone

While the Galaxy S9 will split opinion thanks to its major pros and significantcons, it turns out Samsung has much bigger plans for a far more radical smartphone. And they have just leaked…

My friends at LetsGoDigital get the credit. They have uncovered a major new patent Samsung attempted to file quietly with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for a smartphone with a full front display (no bezels), in-display fingerprint reader and pressure sensitive display.

Samsung also explains how navigating on such a device would work.

Like existing Android smartphones there will be an on-screen navigation bar with menu/home/back keys, while a digital fingerprint scanner will appear on the display when the phone is locked. Unlock the phone and a moderate press on the home button will activate the microphone for voice control (similar to Google Assistant), while a harder press will open a list of applications.

Shifting away from traditional smartphone controls, however, is a hard press on the back button which displays a new range of icons. Meanwhile, a softer held press will allow the navigation bar to be customised (much like icons on iOS).

Interestingly Samsung’s new patent builds upon a similar patent the company filed in November, again discovered by LetsGoDigital, describing the construction of the world’s first truly bezel-less smartphone.

With Samsung rumored to be cancelling the Galaxy S range entirely after the Galaxy S9, the company clearly needs something to get the so-called ‘Galaxy X’ replacement wowing the crowds. I suspect we might be looking at it…
