Samsung's Galaxy S9 Has A Nasty Surprise

When Samsung launched the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus it revealed the two have bigger differences than normal. But that’s nothing compared to the nasty surprise when you look at pricing…

‘Great Secret Features’ and ‘Nasty Surprises’ are my regular columns investigating the best features / biggest problems hidden behind the headlines.

Samsung's Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus have a price problem

Initially, it looked like Samsung had cut the US a big break when it came to Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus pricing. Whereas most other countries in the world saw substantial price increases, remarkably the US actually received decreases of $30 and $10 compared to the $750 and $850 launch prices of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus ($850).

But carriers didn’t get the message.

In what can only be described as the single biggest disregard for smartphone pricing that I have ever seen, BGR has spotted almost all major US carriers are grossly marking up the cost of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus. Here’s how they break down:

  • Samsung (direct, unlocked) - Galaxy S9 ($720); Galaxy S9 Plus ($840)
  • AT&T - Galaxy S9 ($790); Galaxy S9 Plus ($915)
  • Sprint - Galaxy S9 ($792); Galaxy S9 Plus ($912)
  • T-Mobile - Galaxy S9 ($720); Galaxy S9 Plus ($840)
  • Verizon - Galaxy S9 ($800); Galaxy S9 Plus ($930)

Yes, only T-Mobile can come out of this with its head held high as it matches Samsung’s official price tags. As for the others, even if you pay the cost up front you’ll still pay these inflated amounts.

But there is good news.
