OPPO A83 Swaps The Fingerprint Reader for Face Unlock, Starts Selling in Kenya

OPPO A83

Smartphone manufacturers are always keeping up with trends, some which we might not like and some that we appreciate. One such company is OPPO. OPPO is well-known for its camera prowess and the company knows this very well as most, if not all of their phone carry the “selfie-expert” tag.

However, the company’s latest smartphone focuses on bringing a supposedly premium design to the budget segment in the Kenyan space. The OPPO A83 brings a 5.7-inch HD display in an 18:9 aspect ratio dubbed “Full-screen” in a 7.6mm polycarbonate unibody design. Inside, the device packs 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, 3180mAh battery, MediaTek MT6763T Octa-core processor, 8MP selfie shooter with A.I beautification, 13MP main camera and Android 7.1 Nougat.

“We have received an immense response for our Selfie Expert and Leader ‘F’; Series. The design, price and performance of this device will enable OPPO maintain market leadership in the midst of growing competition in this segment, this is part of the plan to start the year in style,” said James Irungu, OPPO Kenya PR and Communications Manager.

The biggest change to the A83 is the lack of a fingerprint reader and in its place, the company has implemented a Face Unlock feature. We have seen this feature on the OPPO F5 and it worked well when in good lighting but the was unusable in low-light.

The specs of the OPPO A83 are at par with the likes of the recently launched TECNO Camon CM and it’s good to see such heated competition ensue as it means the customer gets more to choose from. The device retails at Ksh.23,490 and is available across the country.
