5G is the next big step in mobile network and were getting close closer to seeing it come to life. Companies like Qualcomm and Intel have been conducting trials for months now and it was expected that first 5G-capable phones would launch by the end of 2018 or starting 2019. Qualcomm this week took a step forward in that direction by announcing that it will provide its Snapdragon X50 5G modems to a number of partner OEMs.
Qualcomm said this week that it is working with 18 phone manufacturers to release devices with its Snapdragon X50 5G modems in 2019. The list of companies include Nokia/HMD, Sony, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, HTC, LG, Asus, ZTE, Shar and Fujitsu, among others. All of the companies will be able to make 5G-ready devices for commercial use in 2019. Qualcomm also confirmed that its Snapdragon X50 modems will be used for live, over-the-air 5G NR trials with leading telecom operators that include AT&T, British Telecom, China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, KDDI, KT Corporation, LG Uplus, NTT Docomo, Orange, Singtel, SK Telecom, Sprint, Telstra, TIM, Vodafone Group and Verizon.
Notably, the list of OEMs does not include Apple, Samsung and Huawei. Apple being excluded is understandable as the company has been engaged in legal battle with Qualcomm over the past year. KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently said that Apple would be relying exclusively on Intel for its modem orders and would drop Qualcomm modems from its 2018 devices altogether.
Samsung, on the other hand, will likely depend on its own Exynos chipset for 5G, although the company does use Qualcomms chips as well. According to a report by Business Korea, Samsungs first 5G chip will be called Exynos 5G. The chip will reportedly be unveiled later this year and will be used by Samsung commercially in 2019. Qualcomm plans to demonstrate its Snapdragon X50 5G modem at MWC 2018 later this month. The 5G modem will allow for multi-gigabit per second data rates at significantly lower latency than todays network, amongst other capabilities.
Qualcomm Technologies continues to be a mobile industry leader with its 5G mobile chipset products and 5G ecosystem collaborations in support of aiming to deliver commercial 5G NR mobile devices in 2019, the company said in a press release.
