China's Oppo smartphone to hit Japanese market next week

TOKYO -- China's Oppo brings its flagship phones to the Japanese market next week, looking to capture young consumers with a rich set of features for selfie fans.

The company said Wednesday it will roll out the R11s line Feb. 9 at retailers including Bic Camera and Yodobashi Camera. The handsets will be SIM-free, letting buyers choose their preferred wireless carrier. The phones will be priced at 57,980 yen ($532) before tax.

The R11s model, popular in China and Southeast Asia, features facial recognition technology and 20-megapixel cameras. When taking a picture, the camera uses artificial intelligence to determine details such as the gender, age and skin color of the subject and touch up the image accordingly -- helpful for those picky about the selfies they post on social media.

"We want to establish our position as a camera phone" brand, Oppo Japan chief Deng Yuchen said during Wednesday's announcement.

Oppo has made great strides since releasing its first smartphone in 2011, claiming the top spot in the Chinese market from Huawei Technologies in 2016 and ranking fourth worldwide.
