15 Galaxy S9 Features Revealed In Massive Samsung Leak
Samsung can’t keep a lid on this anymore. Following numerous Galaxy S9 leaks (delivering news both good and bad), the mother lode has landed today which reveals almost every new feature about one of 2018’s most anticipated new smartphones…
The ever reliable MobileFun will grab most headlines as it has attained detailed renders from equally reliable case maker Olixar of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus. Meanwhile SlashLeaks has a specification breakdown after discovering SM-G965U1 (Galaxy S9) testing on Geekbench and SamMobile has battery information.
Here are the key takeaways from all three:
- Galaxy S9 gets a 200mAh increase to 3200mAh (Galaxy S9 Plus unknown)
- Headphone jack remains (cut-outs visible in case renders)
- Polarising Bixby hardware button remains
- Galaxy S9 Plus moves to dual rear cameras
- Galaxy S9 has just a single rear camera
- Cameras on both models are repositioned centrally
- Fingerprint reader / heart rate sensor is (thankfully) repositioned centrally and button itself is now aligned horizontally
- Flash repositioned centrally to right side of rear cameras
- Mono bottom edge speaker remains (again cut-outs visible)
- No front fingerprint reader under the display
- Options for 4GB / 6GB RAM, Galaxy S9 Plus may be 6GB only
- Infinity Edge displays have fractionally smaller bezels than Galaxy S8 / Galaxy S8 Plus
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipsets in both phones (Exynos variant shipping outside US)
- Single / Multi-core Geekbench 4 scores up 20% and 30% respectively on Galaxy S8
- Testing with Android 8.0 Oreo (still possible they ship with Android 7.1)
The standouts here are the retention of the headphone jack, which gives Samsung a clear differentiator to many rivals, and the risky move of giving the Galaxy S9 just a single rear camera. Unlike Apple, traditionally Samsung has not differentiated camera performance on its two models and this will be a blow to users who prefer (relatively) smaller smartphones.
Aside from these specs, common sense also tells us to expect the continuation of IP68 water and dust resistance, similar display sizes to the Galaxy S8 (5.8-inch) and Galaxy S8 Plus (6.2-inches) and native 1440p resolutions (like set to 1080p by default).
With Samsung also tipped to reveal these new Galaxy smartphones as early as February (with a release potentially in March), its clear the company is keen to react to pressure from Apple’s iPhone X and Apple’s much discussed “super cycle” as stock levels increase.
Whether the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus bring enough to the table to stop this remains to be seen. But in combination with its new midrange marvels and the headline grabbing Galaxy X. Samsung is clearly ready to start 2018 with all guns blazing…
