Black Friday: Apple iPhone 8 Vs. Samsung Galaxy S8 Vs. Google Pixel 2 Deals

T-Mobile

T-mobile's Black Friday iPhone deals.

As Black Friday nears, eyes will be focused on the big name products from Google, Apple and Samsung.

Typically, recently released devices don’t participate in the discount festivities. But this year there are a few deals to be had that are worth considering.

If, however, you want to buy a last generation smartphone, or even one before that, there are a few steals worth taking a look at too.

Apple iPhone deals

For older Apple products, you can find some good deals at most of the big stores, including Walmart and Target. The below deals for the SE and iPhone 6, I imagine, will be repeated in quite a few shops.

iPhone SE $99 Target - a good price for Apple users who resolutely want to stick to a smaller device.

iPhone 6 32GB - $129 - Design-wise, the 2014 iPhone 6 isn’t that different from the iPhone 8. That’s where the similarity ends, though. Underneath the iPhone 8 is faster, has better battery life, a better camera and utilises the latest AR tech. That said, for non-power users who want an iPhone without a lengthy contract, this is an excellent deal.

Walmart is offering a $300 gift card with any iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus purchases. This is a fairly standard yearly deal for Walmart and other sellers. These gift card deals usually mean signing up to a lengthy contract or come with less appealing stipulations, so be sure to check the fine print.

T-Mobile is offering two for the price of one on the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, 7 and 7 Plus. HOWEVER, as mentioned before, there are some less appealing stipulations attached and you’ll be tied into a lengthy contract. So read up first.

If you don’t fancy a lengthy contract, but want a newer device, Walmart also has a small $49 off the iPhone 7 if you buy it sim-free.

Samsung

Samsung is offering up to $300 off the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8  when an old phone is traded in. As ever, be sure to check the fine print. It’s likely that to get the full trade-in value you’ll need to swap a fairly new device.  Confusingly, Samsung is separately offering ‘up to $400’ off with the same trade in deal for its latest phones, so I’m not entirely sure which one is accurate. I’ll update this when I have more information.

A few places are offering $200 off the Galaxy S8, or a $300 gift card (Target and Walmart) when a contract is taken out. Check out NewEgg and Best Buy’s $200 off deals.

Walmart also has $200 straight off the Galaxy S7, which brings it down to a very reasonable  $299 for a last generation device.

I suspect that the deals for older devices are better deals because the fine print of the ‘trade in’, buy-one-get-one-free and gift card deals will come with stipulations, as I mentioned earlier. That said, if you’re happy to acquiesce, the Galaxy S8 and Note 8 are markedly better (even on design alone) than the previous generation.

Pixel 2

Oh dear. Despite good discounts on its other products, Google’s Pixel 2 has virtually no Black Friday presence. Not directly from Google, or one of the many other stores participating in the festivities. I did find one deal, a buy-one-get-one-half-price from Verizon, but you’ll be tied into a 24 month contract and the ‘half price’ aspect looks like the cost of the second device will be paid back over time. Treat with caution.
