South Korea's Kospi climbs as Samsung gains 4%

South Korean equities opened broadly higher on Tuesday as tech giant Samsung climbed more than 4 per cent.

Samsung Electronics added 4.3 per cent while its separately-listed Samsung SDI unit, which manufactures displays and batteries, was up 4.5 per cent.

Supermarket owner GS retail and semiconductor maker SK Hynix also lifted by more than 4 per cent.

Those moves helped pushed Seoul’s benchmark Kospi index up 1.7 per cent.

South Korea’s stock market had been closed on Monday for for Hangeul Proclamation Day, which marks the invention of the Korean language.
