Huawei's Mate 10 Makes Samsung Dex Look Pointless

Ben Sin

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro plugged into my television and working as a full fledged desktop.

The just-unveiled Huawei Mate 10 can do a lot of cool tricks (its camera knows exactly what it's looking at), but one of the best ones is that it can function as a full fledged desktop.

Now you may be thinking, "Samsung did this months ago with the Galaxy S8."

Well, yes, but Huawei's implementation doesn't require you to drop another $100 on a separate dock. Instead, all the Mate 10 needs is a basic USB-C to HDMI adaptor.

As soon as the Mate 10 senses it's been plugged into an HDMI outlet, the desktop experience -- dubbed EMUI Desktop -- kicks in within 10 seconds.

From there, the desktop look similar to any PC or Mac you've used. There's a row of crucial apps (Chrome, Photo Gallery, etc) on the left side of the screen, and a "dock" of sorts at the bottom, with the lower left corner storing other apps; while the bottom right corner displaying battery status and connection status.

EMUI Desktop supports keyboard and mouse use too.

Just like the Samsung Dex experience you are able to use all of your phone's apps on the desktop, but only some apps have been optimized for a larger desktop look (luckily, they're the important ones, like Chrome and Gmail). Other apps, like Instagram, opens in a small-ish rectangle window.
