A NEW hihj-tech fridge has been fitted with a camera that takes “shelfies” of its contents and sends them to the owner.

The Samsung Family Hub has WiFi and three inbuilt cameras and a photo is taken each time the fridge door closes, which it is then sent to the owner’s phone.

The idea is for the user to know what they have run out of and prevent food waste by buying too much of items like eggs, milk or orange juice.

The £4,000 appliance will also eliminate the need for shopping lists and make meal planning easier.

Nick Bevan, head of product management at Samsung Electronics, said: “The Family Hub Refrigerator not only offers recipe suggestions but also keeps track of the food you actually have in the fridge, all aimed at making mealtimes fun and reducing the amount of food that goes to waste.”

Earlier this year the Times reported that smart gadgets will soon provide alibis or crime scene evidence, according to Scotland Yard’s head of digital forensics.

Mark Stokes said the Samsung Family Hub fridge, for example, has cameras that carry a live feed of its contents, as well as a screen and built-in shared calendars, music player and a connected app.

Mr Stokes said that the dates and times logged on the machine, as well as images from the camera, could prove crucial in certain cases.

“Wireless cameras within a device such as the fridge may record the movement of suspects and owners,” he said.

“Doorbells that connect directly to apps on a user’s phone can show who has rung the door and the owner or others may then remotely, if they choose to, give controlled access to the premises while away from the property.

“All these leave a log and a trace of activity.”
