Telstra grabs the Oppo A57 for prepaid customers
Telstra's tempting consumers with its first Oppo phone pitched directly at prepaid buyers.
Chinese phone maker Oppo has generally opted for outright sales of its handsets rather than delivering them through Telco partners in Australia, although it has had a long association with Woolworths Mobile and a few devices, such as the Oppo R11, land at other providers.
Telstra has just announced its first Oppo phone to be offered in the form of the affordable Oppo A57, a phone Oppo itself launched in Australia back in May. Telstra's variant of the A57 is a touch cheaper than Oppo's launch price of $329, instead available in black or gold finishes for just $269, including a pre-paid SIM with $10 worth of credit for calls and text messages.
The A57 is a decidedly mid-range handset with Qualcomm MSM8940 Octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage, running Android 6.0 ("Marshmallow") with Oppo's own ColorOS overlay on top. The A57's camera features a 13MP f/2.2 rear sensor and front-facing 16MP f/2.0 sensor, marking it out as a stronger camera competitor than you'd typically see at this price point.
Telstra has also this week changed up its prepaid plan offering with what it calls "data banking", but what would generally be referred to as data rollover in any other case.
In Telstra's case, if you recharge your prepaid plan with at least $30, any unused data is rolled over into the following expiry period, up to an impressive 50GB of usage as long as you keep on recharging. The promise of 50GB of data rollover is a tempting one, although if you're seriously racking up that much data you're arguably overspending on your prepaid recharges in the first place.
The Oppo A57 is available from Telstra online or in-store from today.
