Samsung T5 Portable SSD Review: The Ultimate USB Flash Drive?

Samsung

Samsung T5 portable SSD

The drive supports Windows, Mac and Android devices and is considerably smaller than other portable SSDs I've tested such as the Angelbird SSD2go Pocket, although the latter does come equipped with a heavy-duty aluminum casing.

The T5 is altogether more slimline and elegant, with my sample sporting a brushed blue aluminum case. You probably wouldn't want to drive a car over it, like Angelbird did with its SSD2go (which came out unscathed by the way), but it will certainly survive plenty of drops from hand-height like most SSDs will thanks to their lack of moving parts.

At just 51g, 10mm thick and 75mm/3in in length, it's supremely pocketable, but the downside is that with a USB 3.1 Type-C port, you'll likely need to keep the included cable with you to connect it to older USB 2 and USB 3 ports. This is a bit of a shame as I'd much prefer a fixed cable in something this small. That said, few drives differ, and even the larger Angelbird drives use detachable cables.

Most of us own a USB flash drive of some sort or other and for me, dishing files, benchmarks and photos between PCs on a daily basis, they're not only essential, but I need some decent storage space and a drive that's as fast as possible too.

Samsung has offered numerous portable SSDs before now, which are a cut above your average USB 3 thumb-style drive. These are essentially small, portable versions of the SSDs you might have in your PC and are capable of well over 300MB/sec read and write speeds. The latest - the T5 Portable SSD, sports a USB 3.1 Type-C port and cable, but also has a cable that can connect to standard USB 3 ports as well.
