Mystery Samsung Product Gets A Name And An EU Trademark Application: May Launch This Week?

According to LetsGoDigital Samsung has trademarked "360 Round" with the EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). LetsGoDigital suggests it's a camera and there's pretty good evidence to back that up. The EU trademark page has a list of areas that the trademark request falls into, and it's heavily based around photography.

Further evidence is implied by the model number, which is RM-R260 while the previous 2017 Gear 360 model is SM-R210. So it's pretty clear that this fits into the 360 camera range. What's slightly perplexing is that Samsung has only just launched the Gear 360 update to go with the S8 and Note 8, so perhaps this new camera will improve on resolution or add other new features.

Either way, the camera sounds like it will trade on the roundness of its design. This isn't a new idea, as the original Gear 360 camera was spherical. What's somewhat surprising is the fact that the company made a point of telling me that the new design was the result of seeing how users had chosen to operate the device, most used the included tripod as a hand grip, so the firm built this into the new camera. Some uses might require a more compact device, however, which could explain the reintroduction of a round device.

Both the model number and product name are also mentioned in a certification application for the South Korean Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning. Both the KCC and EU trademark have been submitted in the last seven days.

360 video is very heavily reliant of resolution to make it usable. We're starting to see 8K cameras appear to handle this - although they are very high end, and won't be used by any but the most high-end, professional outfits. If the RM-R260 360 Round really is a 360 camera then perhaps a new form factor will give it extra image sensors or perhaps higher bitrate recording, which would also help improve quality.

With Samsung at IFA in Berlin, Germany this week there's a chance we'll know what product this name belongs to soon enough.
